A walk in the Sun, a fairly typical day in our lives.

Last year this time we went to Skyros with some HH- people. This year it was decided that Tinos was going to be our goal. We were 10 people who set our alarm clocks at half past four in order to catch the ferry 06:00 in Marmari. The journey continued 07:50 from Rafina to Andros and our goal Tinos, where we arrived at. 11:30. I / Rolf had woken up with a really bad back. On the journey was, thankfully, my super masseuse Mai. She helped me but it took also a day of rest. On Sunday, I was so ready for a full day. the others had already done two walks. I was fragile but felt that I probably would be able to walk.

We took a taxi to a church just below the peak that rises above the main town of Tinos. We started with walking to the top, pasting a Catholic church, trough  a Venetian fortress and winding cobbled paths. The view of the ocean, the city and the mountainous island was outstanding. We went down and continued north on the island. On ancient cobbled roads we walked in a green spring landscape. Tinos is known among other things, for its pigeons and the dovecotes were everywhere in the province. The best parts of the year is dry and the barren island was not suitable for animal husbandry so doves were an important part of the diet.

A nice stop was the ”self service” bar we came to in a village. There you could buy almost everything for a coffee break and even a ”snaps”! You provided your self, made the dishes and paid, very nice! Our goal for the day was the village Agapi and several other villages on the way, all white, so typical of the buildings on the ”Islands”.

We were resting in one of the white villages, known for their ”giant caste”, large round stones scattered in the landscape, just as the ice sheet did in Sweden. Resting on a small square outside a white church, in a brilliant sunshine, you get a little jealousy , well? The pace of our hikes are not so high, we have plenty of time to enjoy what our senses perceive.

In the village Agapi (agapw = love) some decided to take a taxi a taxi home. I / Rolf decided that, along with three others continue to walk  another two hours. The walk went a few kilometers on the main road but then we turned onto them beautiful old cobbled monopatis / paths that wind between stone walls in the countryside. It was two hours in spring greenery, birdsong and rippling water. The taxi picked us up to go home and Lrfteris, our driver, told us about the island and its attractions.

Today’s walk was closed as always in a restaurant with good food, drink and as always ,good company. I’m so glad I’m retired!!!!
